Insights from a Batavia Roofing Company: How A New Roof Is Installed

While roofing can be a DIY project, it’s best if it is done professionally. The work is intensive and can be dangerous for the inexperienced. When you hire a professional, however, it’s good to know what to expect from the process. In this article, we’re going to take you through your average roofing installation project in Batavia to help you better understand what goes on.

The Preparation

Before a new roof is installed, the old shingles have to be removed. This will allow the contractor to properly install a new flashing and underlayment. This process can be messy, and the contractor may recommend that you rent a dumpster, if he or she doesn’t already have a rental contract. The old shingles are removed, and the nails will either be pounded flat or removed as well.

The contractor may then install a metal drip edge, though this is not always necessary. It all depends on your local building codes. The drip edge gives the roof a more aesthetic appeal by curling the shingles over the edge. It will also prevent water from reaching the home’s fascia boards.

The Various Steps of the Installation Process

The first step of the roof installation process involves the application of the underlayment. The underlayment is an essential component because it protects the roof from rain, wind, and ice dams. It consists of a self-stick material that is either made from asphalt or a synthetic compound. This is then followed by the application of roof felt paper, which is stuck to the overall structure using staples at about 12-inch intervals. The purpose of the felt paper is to protect the roof from water infiltration, and to protect the shingles from the resins within the wood decking. It also helps increase the fire rating of the roof and keep the interior of the home dry if it starts to rain during the installation process.

Your contractor will also add underlayment under the metal flashing to ensure proper insulation.  Then, the shingle installation process begins with the starter shingles, which are half the width of a normal shingle. This shorter length is meant to improve the cosmetic appeal of the roof and better insulate the underlayment from water. With that out of the way, the contractor will move on to the actual shingles. The duration of this process will depend on the material used. There are many tricks of the trade that will go on while the shingles are installed, with the contractor paying special attention to areas around vents and stacks. Here, it is very important to make the surrounding area fully leakproof and to avoid any structural issues that will turn into bigger problems down the line.

The final steps of the project involve adding vent flashing, placing custom shingles around the vents, and creating additional vent holes if they are needed. Once that is done, the contractor will cap the ridge, and your new roof is complete! Some contractors will also clean up the yard of any nails and debris that may have fallen off during the project.
